Another dangling carrot post in IT rant. Please give your opinion.

Before I started working at my company, I was promised to get more responsibilities and a new job title after a short period of time. What I lacked was mostly knowledge of their products. I started working there mainly because of the future function that I should get. I wanted to make everything specific in terms of dates, objectives etc but it was not really possible for them. I accepted it and started working hard. After a year I got a function that is in between from where I started and the function I should get. I started working there mainly because of the future function that I should get. I wanted to make everything specific in terms of dates, objectives etc but it was not really possible for them. I accepted it and started working hard. After a year I got a function that is in between from where I started and the function I should get.

I worked for some time in that “in between” function and in a meeting with my bosses they let me know that I am doing good work but lack experience that is why they will fill the function with someone else. I expressed that I am not happy about that but I did not say I would go away from them. I was very disappointed because my employer did not even try to give me any sort of help or training to be successful in that role.

The time goes by and I am still doing the in between function. We had a new hire and he was making my life in that function super difficult – refusing to collaborate and being quite hostile towards me – every meeting felt like a warzone. I felt a lot of competition from him as he started taking over my tasks. I notified my boss but told him I will try to handle it myself. After some months I hear that he is considered for the function. My boss asked if I would see him in that function that was promised to me during interviews and I started telling my boss that what he was doing was not ok and quite hostile.

One day my boss called me and told me that I will be getting that function and my hostile coworker is not good for it in terms of communication and some other reasons. But after a week he calls me and tells me that he wants to give him another chance. They expected us to compete for that role during a year or so, so they can choose the best.

After that I started thinking about leaving the company. Me and my hostile coworker expressed that we prefer to get the results ASAP. Months go by and I started going to interviews. I got a good offer but did not sign it at this moment – they are waiting for my answer. I told my employer that I want to leave. My boss hinted me that they want to proceed very fast with that function. Then I had a call with someone from HR and they told me that I was actually already chosen for that function.

I really wanted that function but after all this I do not feel like taking it. They do not honor their promises and I do not trust that they will take the function away from me when it suits them – they have hard time finding medior/senior profiles. Giving the promotion when someone wants to leave does not really feel good for me either. Additionally, I do not feel supported here in my current function, I do not think it will be different in my new function.

I do have here interesting projects, new technology but the sphere at work is just only ok and commute is difficult. At this moment, I also have lots of invasive thoughts at home about my work and I am not happy at my work anymore after they started those games with the function they promised me long ago. It impacts my self esteem negatively and I am very demotivated.

What do you think about this situation? My boss tells me that I am overreacting and does not really understand how I feel. I really feel like going away but the dangling carrot of the function that I wanted makes me doubt so hard. I really wish they treated me super poorly so that I did not have any doubt…

UPDATE:

– the new function means only more responsibilities with no pay increase whatsoever. I was ok with that because I wanted to grow in my job and had a nice salary but not at cost of my mental health.
