On the advice of friends I'm going to citizens advice to see if I can do something about this. I started a job back in April and within the first week I got the flu. I kept coming in because 1) I couldn't afford to stay home and 2) it was my first week! It took me shivering at my desk with a fever for me go home and a manager telling me they didn't want people in the office sick. Fast forward to three weeks ago, I wake up with pain in my neck so bad that I get sent to A&E and over the next few days I spent time in hospital.
I desperately wanted to work because I loved what I was doing and I loved my coworkers, but I couldn't move, Icouldn't dress myself, and I was on heavy pain killers. After two weeks, against doctors advice, I decided I wanted to go back to work. I set up a meeting with HR and the Director to see if there was a way I could ease back into the office, because sitting at a desk for 8 hours would be incredibly painful. Instead they fired me.
I was called “unlucky” for having a medical emergency and they cited me being sick at the beginning. I was also told to calm down when I started tearing up because I'm getting fired!! I had no control over the situation and the Director didn't care. I guess according to him I should have still gone into work.
Now I'm struggling, because I'm still dealing with this pain and stressed out because I have no job. God forbid you have a medical emergency…
