Started a new job on Monday. Twelve hour shifts for fourteen consecutive days then you get one week off.
We're given a one hour break and two fifteen minute breaks every shift.
I don't understand how this is compatible with anyone's fucking biology. It leaves a 12 hour off duty period each day.
In that 12 hours you need to fit in at least an 8 hour sleep period. You also need around 30 minutes to an hour either side to take a shower, get dressed, walk to work, make a coffee and on the other side walk home, get changed, do laundry, have a shower etc – unavoidable activities directly associated with your work duties.
What if you accrue a sleep debt? People can't sleep a guaranteed 8 hours every night. There is no wiggle room over fourteen days to bank more sleep – leaving you sleeping in every day of your week off.
So once you've slept and put aside time to get ready it leaves you with 3 hours to relax, masturbate, talk to family, eat dinner, exercise, or just sit on the couch and contemplate how fucking shit this type of work is.
So I was working yesterday on a 9am – 9pm shift. Cleaning bedrooms in the morning/afternoon and washing dishes in the kitchen in the evening. When I finished the rooms at 5pm and knew I had to spent another fucking 4 hours in the kitchen washing dishes I just thought fuck it. And to think I'll need to put my body through another 9 days of this before the week off. Get fucked.
We were also understaffed – the job is to take care of a workers village (people on the tools doing upgrades and works to a RAAF base here in Australia) – so it encompasses things like housekeeping, admin, kitchen work and general cleaning of the village facilities. We had 120 workers staying at the village and only four people spread across the kitchen, front office and houskeeping. Fucking insane – it is essentially balls to the wall all of the 12 hours of the day. Well I voted with my labour and said no to this kind of stuff.
