I recently got into agriculture (small hobby farm) in the past couple of years. I collect antique tractors and small engine equipment. When my FIL passed (I was his caretaker) I decided it was time to get a job and wanted to enter a field aligning with my interests and chose parts sales at a local tractor dealership and was immediately turned down. I reached out and asked why and was told it was a lack of parts experience. I took a job at an auto parts store for awhile and left due to distance. I applied again to the local tractor dealership and made it through a phone interview with HR, then an in person interview with the dealership manager and his parts manager. When asked why I wanted to work there I told them I was an avid collector of their brand and wanted to work somewhere I could be proud of and have a career. I get turned down the next day. Reached out again and asked how to be a better candidate next time. I was told that my length of time spent at jobs was an issue. In 10 years at 5 jobs I’ve spent no more than 3 years at a job. I’ve left because of wage compression at my longest job, moved states twice and one job was just not what I wanted to do. I’ve applied two more times to this position in two months (it’s been available 4 times in 8 months) I was ignored the first time and the most recent time (last week) I was turned down after the phone interview. I had my wife call and the position is still available. I can understand if they found someone else, but it’s hard not to take it kind of personal now.
