I am a computer programmer, and got this current job 4 months ago through the recommendation of my girlfriend's father.
We live in different countries and I plan to move to hers, but I need a work visa or marry her (which now I feel it is too soon, since we are 24M and 26F). This job provides the work visa, so I accepted it. Note: I did not move yet because bureaucracy takes a loooong time.
During these 4 months, the job has been awful. There was literally not even one day I did not complain about. My Senior had no idea what he was doing.
To give a bit of context (might get a bit techincal, so you can skip it), he was hired to be a Senior computer programmer/ developer through a recommendation of his friend that works in this company. Apparently he thought that he could work as in every big company (this is my assumption), writing useless documentations and just ordering his minions around. The problem is that this is a small company (less than 50 employees), and I was his only minion. So over and over I would have to do his job, fix his mistakes and receive none of the credit. After a couple of weeks, the boss realized that he was just writing documents for 1 person (me) to read, asked him to stop it and develop as he was hired for it. He got pissed, but did it. Being pissed, he often took it out on me.
So I was basically working with someone that programmed for the last time 25 years ago, had no idea what is being used now, was arrogant to learn what is new, would complain about something I did because he never heard of it, and be constantly passive-agressive by LITERALLY lecturing me as if I just turned my first computer on.
This Monday I got his email saying that he could not take the boss anymore, and quit. He would still work until August 25th, but now he told me that he only works until this Friday, and will use the rest of the days as vacation, which he has rights to, to get the full money.
Now he flooded me with terrible instructions on what and how I should work in his absence.
Not only that, but the boss did not even talk to me, so I am assuming they are thinking that my Senior set everything straight and I am good to go. I am able to work alone, but they want me to work 8+ hours without receiving extra, sometimes working in thr middle of the night because something has to be done or fixed while no other person is working. My Senior was paid 4 to 5 times more than me, and no one even mentioned that I am going to get 1 cent of raise due to this drastic change in my work.
Honestly I am thinking about quitting as well.
I know the Senior left, so my problem should go away, but the damage he did to the project is done, and the company acts like they are Saints for BEING ABLE TO provide me the work visa (the process would start in 2 months, so I complete 6 of working). They are looking for another Senior, but I do not think I can explain what the hell happened to the project and why we unfortunately can't change the way it was done.
All that ties me to this job is my girlfriend and the fear of not getting another opportunity so soon.
What do you think about this?
Should I quit? Negotiate a higher compensation?
If I quit, how should I explain it to my girlfriend's father? Because without the Senior, he might think that my problems are gone, but I just think that the compensation for the ammount of work is completely unfair and that they cannot do whatever they want to me just because I want the visa.
Thank you, and sorry for any grammar mistakes!
