How do I fight to get someone’s job back without risking my own?

This person is a very aggressive advocate for the people we take care of and was fired for “resident abuse.” They were interrogated by HR and took the brunt of the punishment for a mistake an employee made – an HONEST mistake (I’m not the employee, they are in a different department than I am) and was placed on a leave of absence. I want to help her – but I can’t risk my own job. I would have nothing. THEY feel like they have nothing – they LOVE these people (the residents). We had a long talk and they said there’d be no hard feelings if they could come back.

I’m by no means a high-up person on the executive food chain but I have leverage and I’m friends with the executive director of our branch. Is there ANY WAY I can help her get her job back? Do you guys have any advice for me at all? I am desperate. Thank you.
