A post on this was just removed by mods as I was replying to it, so I decided to post about it myself. If this gets removed as well, oh well… but I think it's applicable to this sub because it speaks to shitty practices in corporate America and the stress they cause, and how the way these corporations are run brings about these situations (bonus targets). Anyhow, someone posted about being passed over for a job because they are a white male. I have no idea if that really happened, no idea if happened as described, no idea if they were told one thing but the real reason is another. But, I do know this happens all the time. Anyhow, someone posted about being passed over for a job because they are a white male. I have no idea if that really happened, no idea if happened as described, no idea if they were told one thing but the real reason is another. But, I do know this happens all the time.

My bosses have a target to hire a certain number of women and persons of color. The official line of HR is that we don't make hiring decisions based on skin color or gender, only merit… however, they can target specific locations or other similar things to try and attract a more diverse workforce (and if that was really what happened I would have no issue with this).

But, because the target exists my bosses will frequently bring this up during hiring discussions. (Targets effect bonuses, rather than doing the hard work of having equal outreach to different hiring pools or opening branches in new areas… much easier to get your bonus by just telling us who to hire.) They will have a list with interview scores, race, and gender and challenge our hiring recommendations based on not having enough “women or blacks.” (Their words.)

Every time this happens I object, but am ignored. I'm Jewish, and I always feel sick after these discussions thinking about how I would feel if someone said we should hire a Jew because we don't have enough Jews on the list. It's the same type of disrespect to minorities as the white savior complex.

Even worse, they aren't actually allowed to collect this data… so how do they determine what gender and race to assign? People's names. They put “black” next to “black-sounding” names, “woman” next to “girl” names, etc… (again, their words).

To me this is an example of how even a good goal, like diversity, can be turned into something gross by greedy bosses.
