I work for a small business in a high crime area. This morning I was the first one in and a panhandler was waiting in the parking lot. It's a little scary sometimes because people get mad if you don't have anything to give and at my workplace we're not allowed to. This guy walked right up to the driver side window and kept his right hand at his waistband. I told him I didn't have anything and he looked angry and I was hoping he didn't have a weapon. I put the car jn reverse and started backing out, then he took off down the alley away from the building. So when I saw my boss this morning they asked how I was and I told them I felt uncomfortable. I explained what happened and get a lecture on how I shouldn't have focused on the negative or reacted of fear, and my boss expressed a hope the incident wouldn't impact my productivity or mindset the rest of the day…..like WTF is that to say to somebody? Literally I don't even feel like my boss sees a person when they look at me, just another piece of equipment. Their reaction was so different than what I expected and I am more upset by that than the interaction in the parking lot.
