I worked for a Health Insurance company for years. Originally as a customer service rep for Medicare members. I loved the job since I like helping the elderly and talking with them. I topped out on how much I could make so I decided to move over to another position, eligibility. Basically I just entered account information and listened to music.
At first everything seemed okay, but then my supervisor, Sally*, got a bug up her butt against me. Nobody could figure out why, but she targeted me for harassment. If she was mad at me she would openly discipline me in front of everyone. If she was mad about someone else she would come over and yell at me, again in front of everyone. She would nitpick everything I did and was. She even found ways to make it so I didn't get a yearly raise. It got so bad and so frequent that I ended up on anxiety meds. Nobody understood why she hated me, especially since she wanted me on her team. Even the brown nosers that were her best work friends were perplexed because she wouldn't tell them either.
I normally just took the abuse because I needed the work, I liked my co-workers, and I really enjoyed the work. My wife was going to school full time and we decided that she would do that and then get a job and I would be the stay at home dad once she was working full time.
What was weird is that she chose someone else as her favorite. A temp who was very nice, but did almost no work. She spent her day hanging out in the cafe downstairs or visiting friends all over the floor. If she was at her desk she was chatting with Sally or her bestie who sat next to her. She just got in good with Sally. Temp was then hired on for $5 more an hour than the person who had been in the department the longest. She was given a special title to “legitimize” it. A bunch of people bailed form our team at that point. Eventually Temp was told by upper management that her position didn't even exist and was made up and she could become a regular rep at regular pay or resign (she resigned).
Time passed, she kept harassing me, and my wife graduated from College. I put in my two weeks, she said she could not approve that and I told her to get fucked, professionally. On my last day she called in sick. I noticed a lot of upper management movement happening. People on my team being called in for meetings, asking where the lead was, where Sally was, etc. I got bored, went to my lead, told her I was done with my full workload for that day and the next, and said I was leaving. She said I wasn't allowed to leave early and I told her she could write me up and I left.
The next day an ex-coworker said Sally was in hella trouble. Nobody knew why. Sally's boss Jessica* had been looking for me after I left and was pissed I was gone. She had asked for my home number but nobody gave it to her. A few days later Sally was fired. She went in, was called into Jessica's office within the first hour she was there, and was fired. Like, Security came and escorted her to her desk to get her personal belongings, and then escorted her from the building.
The theory is that she had been harassing people and ended up targeting the wrong person and it blew up in her face. She got investigated, the Basically Sally was playing Queen of the Castle without the power, skill, or knowledge to actually pull it off. Apparently my walking out was the last straw and that's why they wanted to speak to me so badly.
Just a story of a bad manager finally getting her comeuppance.
