The job was listed at 40 hours a week and I was given a schedule four 10-hour shifts. Today after hour 3 the supervisor came over and told me to clock out, that they didn’t have enough work for everyone for the day. This wasn’t a “who wants to go home” thing like I’ve experienced at other companies, we weren’t given a choice.
I inquired as to ether this was unusual, and they said it happens pretty often. So it looks like I now have a job where 4 days a week my time is “spoken for” but there’s a good chance I could get up, drive there, and be cut within a few hours, and might not actually ever see a 40 hour workweek. I have no way to determine whether I can actually pay my bills and it has nothing to do with whether I show up or not.
How common is this? Is there any way to avoid it? I don’t have a problem working hard, showing up on time, doing what’s expected of me. But how the hell do you ask adults to set aside 40+ hours a week just in case you might need them?
