Hey all, I would love to try and bring a union into my work place. They treat us pretty well, all things considered, but upper and middle management are big time corporatists at the end of the day.
I know I cannot technically be fired for trying to unionize, but I am in an at will state. And due to our department finally getting some new technicians, I'm not quite as indispensable as I once was.
On top of that, I am in the south (U.S.) and a fair amount of my coworkers are pretty heavily indoctrinated into “rugged individualism”. Meaning if I were going to swing a positive union vote, I'd only have a few known allies and would have to be quite vocal about getting the message out.
We are in manufacturing, so IWW would probably be who I'd look to. And our plant is 3-400ish people, give or take.
I've been mulling it over for some time, and am very tempted to do it. But I definitely need this job, as the pay isn't half bad. So I can't really afford to be fired for whatever bullshit reason if they're that unhappy about union talks.
Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or any advice on how this could go. Thanks!
