I recently moved jobs, one I had been for more than a decade. During the interview the everyone asked what was my salary expectation. My current salary was very low so I said this “I know XXX is a fair employer and so I'm not concerned about salary instead I want to make sure I get the correct title/position here.”
And it in a sense too. The company is very employee friendly and pay their employees well. In my previous one, my compensation was salary + 15% cash bonus. In the new one, its salary + 45% bonus of cash & stocks. My base salary in the new one is more than twice the base salary in previous one, if I include bonus its exactly 3X.
And I'm really proud of achieving that. I'm sure if I had said what my current salary was, I would have received way lower. Different people (manager, HR, and senior folks) all asked me what was my salary expectation was and I kept repeating the same thing. They really liked me and I believe the genuinely wanted to make sure they make a good offer. Unfortunately they didnt know how low I was making.
I'm a people pleaser and have tough time pushing back on people esp ones with authority and was even so close to saying what was my compensation or what was my expectation to the HR. She asked me that so many times and so many ways. But I held my nerve during multiple rounds of interviews and I'm so proud of myself on this.
