My husband and I have been wanting to do the traveling-work life. We sent our resumes to an Inn in Texas and we were asked to come out and give it a trial run for a week. Ad stated job was mainly housekeeping 45 units, light maintenance, and some office work. We'd be paid a salary and housing/utilities paid for.
First day of our training, the owner is communicating through middle-men and having my husband do all this crazy grunt work. Not going to go into huge detail but it was 1.) NOT “light” maintenance and 2.) Not what we signed up for. He almost injured himself a few times throughout the day.
We both agreed he shouldn't be doing anything that could cause serious injury without any employment agreements being signed or knowing if he was covered by workman's comp. Also, we had jobs to go back to back home and still wanted to be able to physically work in the future.
Next morning he's expected to get up on a ladder and they even wanted him to do remodeling work (nowhere in our resumes did we state we did this sort of thing). He asked the owner if was covered by workman's comp. The answer was no, and I come to find out Texas is the only state not required to carry workman's comp. He told the owner he wouldn't be doing anymore work that could cause injury. She looked at him like he had 6 heads and gave him an exaggerated “Okkkaaayy….”. He found other things to do that day, so it's not like he just gave up.
A couple hours later, we were asked to leave….through a middle man. When asked why, she said she didn't know just following directions. Pretty much laughed in her face because it was obvious why and I'm pretty sure they were worried about being sued and I hope someone does one day.
Stupid po-dunk town assholes trying to take advantage of people traveling a long way to work.
