I'm asking this here because I know a lot of people work in the food service business in this sub, and I also wanted to get their perspective. So it's relevant.
I like going to very reclusive, calm, spacious and peaceful restaurants. I don't like loud noises and I especially hate loud music in restaurants (I'm 26). If I go to a restaurant/cafe that has loud music, I always tell the waiter/manager to turn it down or preferably turn it off. Usually this request is met. But few times, waiters would just turn it down a little bit and then later turn it back up. Either because they enjoy the music or they think other customers “need” it.
My view is that music isn't an essential part of the restaurant experience. Even if it were, if it's causing a negative physical impact on a customer, it's not the end of the world to turn it down/off for the duration of the customers visit, especially when asked nicely (which is like 45 mins prob). I've never seen any other customers complain saying to turn the music on again. It's about as essential as a human's appendix – you can live without it.
