So I just wanted some perspectives on here about sharing your personal life with coworkers. Thus far, I’ve worked for four companies in the banking industry and have learned over time that it’s really just best to keep to yourself, and politely distance myself from coworkers in each job I transitioned to. Now, with my current job, all of my coworkers are in a completely different State. However, at this point they do know a bit about me — but very general things like how I have a daughter, I’m originally from a Pacific island, what my prior career roles have been. I don’t care to share additional details about my life, and whether it was the result of working remotely for two years, I prefer to keep to myself. To be honest, I like having a strictly professional relationship with coworkers. Yesterday, my boss made a comment that kind of turned me off. She said “I’m sure your coworkers would really appreciate it if you shared pictures of your daughter or your wedding day”. I kind of don’t want to? This same group was absolutely silent when my coworker had announced she was pregnant with her second child — I’m sure they won’t miss out on my personal moments lol! Anyway, sorry for the vent. I just need some honest opinions on whether or not I’m being a jerk. I just like boundaries. All thoughts are welcome!
