Loss of pay, in order to not inconvenience coworker

I've been taken off a team and it results in a loss of 6K for me. The only reason given (and it wasn't in writing) was that it was easier for the newest team member to take over my responsibilities versus for she and I to share and her have to also take on something else to balance her hours -as most of the rest of us do. We usually have two projects going. She has had only one this year and will continue that next year. I have seniority, and am about twenty years older. So the job I was doing is basically dissolved, because she's taking over all of it. It doesn't give her more money (the stipend tops out at 6K) but it takes the stipend away from me. I don't know what (if anything) I can do.
