I'm a live in condo superintendent that has been working as a live in super for 10 years, for a condo tower that was always a bit much for one person. This place has over 500 units, 4 parking levels, full amenities, very demanding residents and only one super, no assistants.
Ever since I started working there i knew the place was under staffed. But I took it, knowing I needed the job. Over the years I have been denied raises, have only received one increase in 10 years. I keep getting the “there's no money” excuse, while I witness the corruption and money laundering going on through management.
The pandemic really put things into perspective when my work load increased 50% when most people started working from home. To add insult to injury, management was blaming ME for the increased garbage costs and claiming I wasn't completing my duties. (No shit, there's just no time)
The place was full of Karens and entitled people who demand everything, yet out of all those 500+ units, I would receive a Christmas tip from maybe 3 people at most, no matter how much money I saved people that year.
Well the bitching about me not completing my work just got too much, if you're gonna increase my workload and not my pay, the least you can do is leave me alone.
I cast a net with every contractor I knew, and was quickly given a call by another condo who needed a super ASAP and got my number from a plumbing contractor that knows me. they offered me an increased pay rate, but above all they offered me Union and benefits. The building is a third of the size, and is in a quieter area.
I sat on this deal until I notified my old workplace on Monday morning that this would be my last week. They were frantic, as they are very disorganized and rely on me knowing the answers to most issues. Management has no clue even what days garbage pickups are. They begged me to stay, saying I was crucial to the place running properly, yet they rejected my demand of matching the other building's offer plus 15%. So I guess I'm crucial to their operation but not enough to compensate.
I moved out on the Friday and have received dozens of calls and messages from my old workplace, asking questions and pleading for help, all messages I've ignored.
This old place is charging $700 plus in monthly fees to 500 units but apparently giving me a raise is too costly. Yet the building with a third of that can give me a decent offer.
Last I heard from a co-worker, the new super can't even speak English, has no experience etc. To add insult to injury they were shocked to learn that I owned all the tools and they own none, so they're pretty screwed.
Should have laid off the bitching and paid me I guess.
