So I started my job back in middle of 2021. I am on a team of 3, with my other team members having been with the company 5 years, and 1 year. To preface this, the team before hand has not really had great luck with bosses for a couple years, lots of changes.
When I joined, my boss was really excited to have me and as we started working together, he started to talk about how I would be a great fit to eventually lead the team. When it came to salary negotiations, he gave me a line about “there is likely going to be some movement here on the team soon, so I don’t want to overdo your raise now for you be way over paid when the ‘movement’ happens.” So we agreed on a decent raise, but not as much as I was hoping for.
We just had a meeting the other day where he said “so actually we are likely going to have the guy who has been here 5 years lead the team.” This completely threw me off because he had been psyching me up to be leading the team, etc.
Here’s the thing though: I think that the guy who has been here 5 years should have a shot and is a great team member/person. I’m happy that he gets this opportunity, but at the same time I’m very annoyed that this tactic was used on me in negotiations for salary. It was also used to butter me up for months and I just feel lied to.
