There was a bad car wreck outside my office today. The lady driving plowed through two fences and her car was resting upside-down, guillotined by a lamp post. Naturally, many of my coworkers and I rushed to free her from the vehicle. (I know you’re not supposed to move people after a car accident but adrenaline kicked in.) The driver was conscious but clearly in shock.
The first thing she does after getting out is call her boss. Not the police, not her family, but her place of work. She tells him that she’s going to be late to work. She was in a terrible accident with possible injuries and she was still planning on going to work. The guy on the phone immediately sets off about how he doesn’t believe the accident is that bad and demands she sends photos as proof. He goes on a long rant about how she can’t be replaced on short notice and productivity will suffer because of this. The woman wasn’t crying after the accident, but she was now.
Remember friends, your job doesn’t care about you. They don’t care about your safety, well-being, or happiness. They only care about the labor you can produce. You are a number in a very long excel sheet. Never put your work first.
