Question about clocking in according to the law

I have a relatively simple question about clocking in based on what the law says in my home state of South Carolina. Some context to help answer my question: I work on a food truck, private property that I don't own. I don't drive it, but once I step on the truck, I'm there to do my job. It drives to and from events; on the way there and back, I sit on the side seat. My boss just told me that I'm not to clock in on the drive and that I'm only to clock in at the event, even though I ride in a private vehicle that I have no control over. My question is, when does the law say I should be clocking in and out? If I drive separately to events, I wait to clock in until I get there and clock out as soon as…

I have a relatively simple question about clocking in based on what the law says in my home state of South Carolina. Some context to help answer my question:

I work on a food truck, private property that I don't own.

If I drive separately to events, I wait to clock in until I get there and clock out as soon as the event is over. The way I see it, if I'm driving separately, I can turn back and go home at any moment, so clocking on the ride does not make sense, whereas if I'm riding on the truck, I have no choice on if I can leave or not, thereby making sense that I should clock for the ride.

This screws me over, because if we have to go to an event an hour away that lasts for an hour, I'm essentially taking 3 hours out of my day and getting compensated for 1, which comes out to $3 an hour.

But that's my take on it. What does South Carolina or United States law have to say on this? I know it's kind of a specific situation, but I know you guys are much more well versed about this than I am. Thank you so much in advance!
