So I work as a cook at a retirement home. Recently, we started accepting overflow covid patients from nearby hospitals. At first, this wasn't an issue as they were all secluded on their own floor with nurses handling their meals and dirty dishes. For a week, this was fine. The nurses would wipe down and disinfect any food carts and reusable mugs before they were sent back up to the kitchen.
But for some reason, the dumbass regional manager thought that this was a waste of time and would rather the cooks, not given any PPE aside from a pair of flimsy gloves should go directly to the door of the covid ward and handle freshly used eating utensils, plates, trays, etc.
After about 3 days of doing this, I came down with covid symptoms. Nearly two years of being fine and avoiding infection, until this. What a surprise!
So I take a PCR test the following day, it comes back positive. I'm told to come back to work in 7 days. I show up, take a rapid test, it's positive. Told to wait another 5 days. At this point I've missed 10 shifts of work.
I'm finally allowed back Sunday(yesterday), and I'm told that only one missed day would be covered.
My rent, phone, and car payments are due in a few days. My paycheck this week will only be about $200, I don't qualify for unemployment, and I'm pretty much fucked no matter how I look at it.
I'm quitting this job with no notice today. If they won't respect my lost time due to their neglegence, well then I won't feel bad about leaving them understaffed.
