I work for a small facility that is part of the county, which makes me a county employee. We have a Union and one of the rules of the union is that you cannot be fired without just cause. In order to fire someone, the management must have a hearing with our union reps to prove that the employee has done something worthy of them being fired. Over the course of the three years I have been working here, I have noticed that the management has a way around this.
When they want someone fired, but do not have a good reason to want them fired, they will give them an excessive amount of write ups for every little thing.
A recent example of this is out buildings maintenance man. He was a good worker who had been there 20 something years. The newer members of management didn’t like him though, so they started doing writes up for every little think. He got written up for his work orders being too long, she he shortened them and then got wrote up for them being too short.
Eventually, the constant write ups became too much for him and he put in his resignation. When my boss was asked if they had any replacements lined up, she smirked and said “we have a few very talented people who would really like this job.”
They’ve done this to other employees too. They make them so miserable that they end up quitting. It makes me so angry to think about. What’s the point in having a union if the management is going to work around it?
