I am 60 years old. After working as a professional in a hospital setting the past decade,I retired. I took a part-time position at my local public library as an assistant in the children’s department. My boss loved me, told me repeatedly what an asset I was to the department, bragged to others in the library about my work. I made $9 an hour. When I was hired, I was told I would be working 20-25 hours a week. After about 3 months I was working 30-35 hours a week. When I approached my boss about reducing my hours, she burst into tears and said I needed to work at least 25 hours a week, but she’d try to accommodate me. The next day I was told I would be required to work every weekend in order to make her schedule work with the staff she had. The following Monday I wrote a resignation letter giving a month notice and thanking the library for the opportunity, but the work schedule and my lifestyle were at odds. I turned it in at the end of my shift. The next day, at the end of my shift, my boss told me to turn in my key and not come back, which I did. This is why people like me, able-bodied, reliable, and with lots of experience don’t want to be in the work force. It’s brutal and stupid.
