I was working as a massage therapist. I could tell stories for days about the mistreatment and misclassifications in this field but that's not what this post is about. I thought that I found a job I actually liked, that I wasn't taken advantage of like I had been in the past. But, I just wasn't making a living because this one did have in common with all of the others that I only made commission plus tips. So if I had no appointments, I made no money.
My partner had to have a pretty significant surgery so that cut down our household income as he'd be off work so there was no way I could gamble on that job anymore. So I accepted a third shift job so I could work around my school schedule. I put in my two week notice for my massage job.
The owner asked me to work out somehow as I was the only massage therapist. I said that I could stay on call.
One evening I woke up from my before work nap and I had a text message asking if I could come in the following day to do a massage and I had a migraine and still had to go work all night at my other job so I declined. The owner texted me later that evening asking, “are you really not coming in tomorrow?” Which I thought was strange because why would I say no if I really meant yes?
A few days later, I was sitting in my morning class already with no sleep as I had come straight from my third shift job and was planning on sleeping after class and going to the store as my partner was unable to drive so I was also responsible for all of the shopping. I get a text from the owner with a picture of 3 massage appointments which may not seem like much but when they were scheduled starting at 2 PM and ending at 7:30 PM that was kind of a lot considering I was in class until 11 and had to go to the store and work overnight that night: when was I supposed to sleep? She also never asked, just sent the picture.
So I responded that I thought that I'd be able to choose appointments or not and I thought that was the point of working “on call” and if I was wrong, I would need to reinstate my resignation because there was no way that was sustainable. To which she replied, “I'll tell the guests you no longer work here.”
The point of my long winded rant I guess is that it doesn't matter how much you think you like a job or think you get along with the people, they genuinely don't care about you.
