So, I'm stuck in a fork in the road: the quickest route being a physician assistant (2 years), the longer one being a nurse practitioner (3-4 years including a third degree I need to get). Pay is… basically the same, but what I'm most interested in for a future job is this.
I want to be able to work with a good work/life balance, and I want to be able to be in a position where the people that work under me (medical assistants, techs, etc. that are basically assigned to work for me as a provider) can get paid fair wages. Medical assistants make like 15/hour where I live, that's horrendous since they deal with people far more than the doctors/PAs/NPs do. If I can, I want the power to pay them easily $20+/hour starting wages with good raises based on their actual work performance. None of this “oh you missed an email last month so no raise” bullshit or “you get a 10 cent raise” crap. I mean I want to give them a “look, you're doing awesome, so I'm gonna bring you up to 21/hour after being here for a year,” every year without fail.
I want to actually let them take 2 weeks off a year at least, not including sick days. Good insurance too.
What is the best option to pick if I want to do that, a nurse practitioner with a DNP or a physician assistant with an MS-PA? Is it even possible with those degrees?
If not, what job should I pursue to make sure I can have employees that actually can survive in the world?
