Just found out I’m being paid less than new hires.

I've been with this company for almost 5 years coming up at August 18th. I only make $14.80, and out of curiosity asked a co-worker what he was making. He's a new hire making $15 an hour. Aside from asking for a raise, what are my options? I'm also part of the union and a lot of our rights under the union contract are being ignored such as selecting our schedules, I'm at the whim of the supervisor instead of being able to choose. I'm thinking of asking for a minimum of $16 an hour considering the other job I'm looking at is that same pay (I just don't know if they'll accept my application yet) I'm fucking heated but I need to think straight about my options and what I can push for.
