Reminder unions are only as good as the people involved in them

My union is currently majority Baby Boomers or older Gen X. Last union vote they all agreed to allow the company to take away the bonus structure in exchange for worse insurance. (Seriously they said the new insurance program was more expensive so they needed to make a cut, but if you wanted to keep your existing plan you'd be grandfathered in per the union agreement) Basically all new hires will have a much worse insurance plan than another grandfathered in AND they won't have any bonus structure. Our union Boomers are the epitome of “fuck you, got mine” When I asked our union president why they didn't push back on keeping the existing plan if they want to take away our bonus structure he told me and I quote “they wanted to take everything. When I asked our union president why they didn't push back on keeping the existing plan if they want to take away our bonus structure he told me and I quote “they wanted to take everything. Be happy with this. I only got another couple years. You can run for president if you want my job when I'm gone”. Never occurred to them to push back on anything. Just take the crumbs the company is willing to give. Okay then…. glad I'm paying my union dues.
