Is it legal to not allow direct staff to talk about a layoff to contractors?

In an all staff meeting today, my employer announced they will be having layoffs next month. They asked us not to tell contractors and consultants due to contractual obligations. Is this legally allowed? Are they able to retaliate towards employees who discuss it with contractors off company premises? I didn’t sign and NDA around it or anything.
