So, I work for KFC in a major city centre in England. The company has a policy that you’re not allowed a break unless you’re rota’d in for at least 6 and a half hours. This rota doesn’t include cleaning time, which can last multiple hours on particularly gruesome shifts.
But in the UK, every worker who works 6 hours + is entitled to a 20 minute break by law, and this 6 hours includes overtime hours such as cleaning and what not.
We also usually close at 10/11pm, meaning some shifts require us to be in the shop until as late as 2am. Next week, I’m working a night shift on one day, and a morning shift the day after. This gives me only 8 hours of rest even excluding clean up time.
UK law requires at least 13 hours between shifts, something which I’ve made my boss aware of several times. He continues to rota people in with less than 13 hours rest between shifts.
We also don’t have a union, and jokes between staff members regarding starting one have been met with very aggressive stares from all but one shift manager, with a regional manager even shouting “no you won’t” at one girl for jokingly saying she was gonna start up a union.
I’ve reported it to HMRC (the government office in charge of this stuff), but they haven’t as much as replied after several weeks. My boss and his bosses are breaking labour laws left, right and centre, and the government don’t seem to care.
Currently searching for a new job, but the “unskilled” job market in my city is honestly abysmal and I can’t afford even a single week without pay right now. I honestly don’t know what I’m gonna do if I can’t find another job soon, I feel like I’m dying and nobody with any power to change that fact seems to give a shit.
Fuck my life!
PS sorry if this was ranty, I just needed to get it out somewhere and thought y’all might like to know how shit of a place KFC is to work
