My Boss Wouldn’t “let” me go home to deal with a burst pipe, so I left

Title is as it suggests. The event in question happened Friday afternoon and I decided to post about it now because I'm at home bored and honestly kind of pissed off thinking about it. My wife called me to tell me that a pipe burst in the basement and it was flooded. She had no experience dealing with this sort of thing. She was panicked and there was at least an inch of water covering the basement floor. I tried walking her through this. I showed my boss the video she sent me and he told me that I can't go, we can't run the business without me here. Mind you, we have a good number of my co-workers out with COVID. We were running the bank with myself, 1 teller and the manager. The manager doesn't count in the equation honestly. He not only doesn't know how to do…

He not only doesn't know how to do the daily operational tasks but outright refuses. He says his job is to “do coachings”, “generate business for us” and to “take calls” and NOT to do the daily procedural things we do at the bank. I've caught him in his office texting countless times and he claims it's to talk to customers. Who in the fuck texts the bank manager? I'm a financial advisor but even I know how to process things like loan payments to help the team when needed. Everyone should have a base knowledge to help out in my opinion.

So I did the math. I submitted my two weeks notice a few days ago because I found a better remote job that pays more. I drive an hour to work as it is. So the extra time at home is great. They treat me like shit here as it is. So what would I rather? Potentially lose my house from water damage, or lose a job that sucks and not get paid for a few weeks? The math was easy. I dropped my keys and bank property on his desk and calmly walked away.

He tried telling me how much I was hurting my co worker and was trying to stand in front of me to stop me so we could talk and negotiate. He was saying stupid shit like I could wear jeans the rest of my two weeks or I could bring my dog to work or he'd buy me lunch. He even got my co worker in on the game getting him to beg saying I was really screwing him over. I calmly told my I guess now former boss that he should do the work or if he doesn't the staff he should close early or he'd risk losing an amazing employee , in reference to my co worker.

Today I got a few calls and texts from my boss and co workers asking where I am for my shift. I made an easy decision. Deleted the texts, ignored the calls and blocked the numbers.

I'm at home and decided to go to brunch to celebrate. It'll erode our savings a ton to have me not working for a few weeks and to pay the deductible on the home owners policy. BUT I get to spend time with my wife and daughter. Fuck'em. I was prepared to work a two weeks notice. I was prepared to leave reasonably. They chose. I had an emergency and apparently they said my emergency wasn't worth their time.

I've learned this lesson once before. If an employer tells you your emergency isn't worth their time, leave. Only be as loyal to someone as they are to you. It's an abusive relationship otherwise.
