I work at a fast food restaurant in NC and lately they’ve transitioned from traditional drive-thru window service to sending people outside with tablets like Chick Fil A. Just not as classy. This has been going on about a year. When this was first introduced we could wear alternate work shirts that weren’t black. We had a shitty umbrella for shade at least and cold packs for our necks. It’s not even Summer yet and all that has disappeared. No umbrella for shade, no alternate shirts, no cold packs. Just take this shitty tablet go out on the black asphalt during the hottest part of the day and don’t forget the upsells. We can wear shorts but only outside, we were told we have to change back to long pants once we come back in. WTF? We stay out there for 2-3 hour increments. There was a girl today literally crying because she had to go outside and stand in the hot sun with no customers during the afternoon. She has breathing issues and when she went out when it was hot last time she had to call in her next shift because she didn’t feel right. Some of these people that work here are not very healthy and can’t stand to be outside for that long. At least not for $9 or $10 an hour. Like I said this is NC an at will work state so maybe nothing can be done. Would like to hear some opinions from people smarter than myself.
