TDLR; I had a manager pull me aside yesterday at my second job, that I’m at ten hours a week at most, to ask if I really wanted to even be there and had me taken off the front end schedule just in case I would quit after our conversation.. all because I work part time and my availability is limited with my other job that I get 30 hours a week at. The catch? I was hired there with clear transparency about my availability.
The details: Four months ago I was hired at this store as a cashier part time, specifically to work around my main job’s schedule, for one to two evenings a week. I was super clear on what I wanted, and they were super happy to accommodate that and bring me on.
Yesterday, I went in and they had me off the front end schedule (I was on the main schedule still, just not on our rotation schedule), because a manager wanted to talk to me. They asked if I even wanted to be there, because if I was going to be staying at the school I work at and keeping that as a full time job, it would be best to part ways with the store. I was really shocked, because I had been hired specifically to work around my school schedule. I also really love my job at the store, and I need the few extra hours I get.
After that bold statement, he continued to tell me that they had to “touch base” because I don’t come in when they have tried calling me in, I was sick once, and I had an event this last weekend that I requested off for weeks ago. Also mentioned that they’re hiring more cashiers due to being short staffed and somehow my availability made me a slacker.
Now, this very manager was the one that had me fill my availability out and told me how to convey the days I can work, can’t work, and the days I’d be willing to cover if they had a call out but don’t want to be regularly scheduled on. The days he has tried to call me in on have been days that I’m not available at all. My one sick day, I had a bad fever, sure as heck shouldn’t be thrown in my face.
They also have scheduled me two weeks in a row on evenings I’m not available for, which I’ve made clear to them, and I’m sure those are why they’re questioning my employment and desire to work for them… but they’re expectations are expectations for a full time employee, not someone who is there for some extra cash.
I ended up as a floater yesterday, and told them I’d only stay if they wanted me, they said they like me, but it sure sounds like they want me out, so I am now job hunting for a good summer job while school is out, and am armed with my notice to give as soon as a job is secured.
