‘Leave Bank Request’ is Icky

Today I received an email from HR asking all employees in my massive organization to consider contributing to a leave bank for an employee in a division that is very far removed from us. Presumably it’s so that they can still get paid leave instead of a leave of absence? I looked on LinkedIn and it looks like the employee has been with the organization more than 20 years. My position (paid intern) doesn’t accrue leave so I can’t help with that, but I’m horrified that an employee of 20+ years is now at their distant coworkers’ mercy for their livelihood in what is probably a personal or family health emergency. Also: how weird is it that HR told us the name of the person who needs donated leave? That feels wrong to me as well. The whole situation just feels gross and I hate seeing a large organization force…

The whole situation just feels gross and I hate seeing a large organization force employees to donate their earned leave or else watch their coworkers lose their incomes to medical emergencies.
