My co-worker and I are getting a % in equity of a new acquisition our company is buying. Its something they do for their best guys. Our (me and my co-worker’s) direct supervisor has gotten quite a bit over his time with the company, but thats because hes been here 13 years and has more responsibilities than us. I’m at year 7, my co-worker is in year 4, and we have the same level of responsibility.
I got my first piece of equity last year (after 6 years with company) and it turned out to be 1% each of 3 different properties, totaling about $45k in value. This year, they bought a massive new property which should be extremely profitable, and they gave me 0.25% which is worth about $90k alone. But they gave me co-worker 0.75% of the same property “to catch him up” with my previous deal. But his valuation is about $270k which is an absurd difference of about $180k over mine.
Again, I dont really have room to complain about such a nice bonus, but wtf? For reference on how huge this is, my salary is only $70k in a very HCOL area.
Whats the best way to approach the owners about this?
The owners have so much money they dont know what to do with it and dont know the value of a dollar (think Bluth banana joke). I think they are just going on a basis of “idk lets just give them some % and they’ll be happy”.
