I was an assistant at my company. I applied for and received a promotion. I did well as a manager (meaning I hit my sales goals). I’ve been in my new role for 5 months already. I was “temporarily” demoted today “until mid-July or so” to help my old manager and do my old job since I know the market while another manager oversees my managerial duties.
My initial reaction: WTF?! I don’t miss my old job. I already paid my dues to get to where I am. I don’t want to backtrack. I want to keep growing in this role.
Later considerations: For meeting budget, I’m due a bonus at the end of June. Also, I get some company stock. To my knowledge, my position and pay aren’t changing. I’ll make more than I did when I did the job the first time.
Here are the options I feel that I have:
1) I can suck it up, take this step backwards for now, do my old job, and hope that my manager role is restored later as promised.
2) Tell them that if my managerial duties are taken away, then I quit. And probably quit. It would put some strain on my husband, but I can join his insurance and we’ll be okay for a period of unemployment.
3) Suck it up, keep working, and look for another job in the meantime. I can quit when my bonus and stock come through end of June. But again I can tell that it’s gonna be a hard month, because I’m being given a dumpster fire of work to do.
4) I can take FLMA leave for the month for mental health to distance myself from this situation. I can keep my benefits while I look for a new job and I can wait out my bonus and stock. Also, I can return to my job if I can’t find anything better. Although they would know that it was too perfectly timed.
