Question for people who hire… Do you actually care about “gaps in your resume?”

I have a friend who worries about leaving their toxic job because they don't want to have a “gap in their resume”. But their job regularly brings them to tears, and stresses them out so much that all they do every evening and every weekend is worry about the next week. They keep saying “I can't just quit my job. Future employers will look at the gap in my resume and refuse to hire me.” Is this actually true? I feel like the last two years have changed things.
