Update: Just found out my counterpart colleague is making 20k more than me.

I waited until my 90 day review to bring it up to my boss. I told him that our salaries should be equal. He tried to tell me that she does things for him that I don’t do… but agreed that I do a lot more than he initially anticipated I would do, that I deserve more money, and he would bring it up to his boss.

Edit: After that discussion, he started reducing my worlkload and not having me do certain things, giving them to my colleague instead. I had a feeling this was to justify the difference in pay.

Today, approximately 3 months after I spoke with my boss about this, he informed me today that they are raising my salary by $15k. He tells me this over the phone as I’m trying to get out the door at the end of my day.

I can’t help but feel more disappointed than happy. Disappointed because in my eyes they are clearly telling me that:

  1. They value my colleague more than me, when we are supposed to be basing compensation on the role instead of the person in the role.
  2. They know that I know that and they do not care.
  3. They don’t value me enough to give me an extra $5k to make me feel equal, appreciated, and valued.
