I started a new job last month and was fired this past week. According to HR, the reason was that my manager requires weekends and after hours support and I wasn’t willing to adapt.
During the interviews, I was NEVER told I’d be expected to work consistently beyond 6 pm, but was told that I might need to be on call for weekends for urgent matters.
The afterhours support is not urgent at all, it can definitely wait until the next business day, but the manager is just constantly anxious and wants it done immediately.
This job is salaried and “unlimited PTO” so you can imagine that even while on PTO, I’d have to jump back on to work and not get paid a penny more.
I’ve been offered a measly severance (1 months pay), in exchange for not suing them.
Has anyone had experience with this type of “deal”? Realistically, if I took this to court, would I have good case/potentially win more than what they are giving me?
side note: I’m just frustrated that I quit my stable job to join this crappy company. Now with the current job market (hiring freezes/layoffs) it’s going to be difficult to find another job. I can’t believe that only after a month, they fired me! And the reason being that I’m not willing to work extra (essentially for free) 12 hr days and on weekends. If I was told from the beginning about these crazy hours, I would have never joined this company.
