Why does my job feel the need to systematically “break” people?

I just started a new job. Decent pay, considered prestigious. After 6 months I realized I was being emotionally abused by management. It was hard to pin down because I’m not being screamed at or insulted. It’s more like micromanaging, gaslighting, and making you feel like you’re going to get fired at any minute. I confided in a few coworkers. They said this was normal at this workplace and everyone they knew had cried multiple times, sometimes hiding in the office somewhere. Why? Why do they do this? Is it because the work is hard? Or because they want broken drones with no spirit? People stay in this job for years. I have coworkers who have worked there for 15 years. Why the cruelty? I just don’t get it.
