I used to have practically the same views as my boomer grandpa who is one of those “I bought all my houses and cars in cash when I was young, kids these days are lazy, raising wages will make everything more expensive” kind of people. He’s pretty much THE stereotype when it comes to boomers. He has never held a job outside of a family owned business or a business he bought. He’s so detached from reality it’s impossible to argue with him. I used to be the same way, I thought if I worked hard and did what I was told I would be rewarded, that maybe sure some places should pay a little more, and that the United States was the best country to live in.
I will HAPPILY and humbly admit I was wrong and that we need some serious change. Around December last year i took a job at a local gas station. The pay was shit, no benefits, and the company was awful to its employees. I still thought if I showed up every day and worked hard I would be able to move up. About a week later I found this subreddit with the initial thought that it was just full of lazy people who didn’t wanna work for a living due to the “anti work” name. Once again I will happily admit I was wrong.
I started seeing the problems within our country, the blatant issues with capitalism, and that there are many other countries in the world with much better working conditions, wages, and benefits than the US.
For awhile I was conflicted, but the more research I did and the more I scrolled and scrolled through this sub I came to the realization that this shit sucks. I am now happily employed with an amazing small company that pays me wonderful, tons of benefits and my boss is a very caring and understanding person.
Just wanted to say thanks to y’all cause when I look back at the person I used to be I’m ashamed. I hope more people will wake up and realize how screwed up things are. I’m working on bettering myself still as 21 years of instilled beliefs are hard to get rid of overnight, but hopefully this country can make some progress and get out of this mentality from the early 1900’s.
Thanks again y’all
