A short backstory, I amwas a manager an engineering consulting firm in Oregon. I saw similar companies giving their employees the rest of the day off to let employees deal with the recent supreme court ruling. So before lunch I pitched the idea to the president of the company that I think it would be beneficial to do the same thing. It's a summer friday and we're caught up on the majority of the projects we're working on. It would do us no harm to close for a half a day and just pick things up on Monday.
During our conversation I saw a side out of this man I've never seen before. One quote that stuck with me was, “No we're not closing, what benefit would it give them to take a half a day?” This was after I saw one of our female consultants, who I'm close with and know her back story of having an abortion in her past, visibly upset. I mentioned that to him without naming who it was, and his direct response was, “Life doesn't always go your way, we're staying open.”
So I told him I disagree and we had some more words exchanged. Enough to where I no longer feel working for this man. I told him if that's your stance on this, I can no longer work here and resigned on the spot. Hopefully there's a more decent boss out there to work for in the future.
