A 9 month unpaid internship….legal? (FL)

Hi all, I switched colleges recently and didn’t expect the internship to be almost a year long, 20-25 hours a week. I’m in my masters for social work. So i’m laying here, reading my emails and getting pissed. I was accepted the offer (after being made to beg) for this specific internship “opportunity.” She asked me and another person when we were available to work, I said anytime M-F, and she was like “oh well we’re going to need you on weekends.” and they’re trying to train me 4 weeks before my internship is even supposed to start. i am assuming it’s not paid, but since it’s a therapy, the rates for interns services run $70.00 and nothing has been mentioned to us (private practice.) other intern is from a different school so i don’t know what their thoughts are. im giving up my job and savings. is this fair?…

Hi all,

I switched colleges recently and didn’t expect the internship to be almost a year long, 20-25 hours a week. I’m in my masters for social work.

So i’m laying here, reading my emails and getting pissed. I was accepted the offer (after being made to beg) for this specific internship “opportunity.”

She asked me and another person when we were available to work, I said anytime M-F, and she was like “oh well we’re going to need you on weekends.” and they’re trying to train me 4 weeks before my internship is even supposed to start.

i am assuming it’s not paid, but since it’s a therapy, the rates for interns services run $70.00 and nothing has been mentioned to us (private practice.) other intern is from a different school so i don’t know what their thoughts are.

im giving up my job and savings. is this fair? and how do i get my way a bit with this? is 9 months unpaid legal? i have done 3 month internships which was whatever but 9??

i can’t EVER leave the internship or it counts against me and i’d have to redo everything or fail. :-/ . I quit my social work profession for a stupid unpaid therapy job for “experience.” LOL
