So I have been working at my company for the past 18 months. I've done really well and have been working 60 hours a week without getting paid OT (through a loophole they pay it at the same rate) and often working more hours than that unpaid to make sure I do a great job. 2 months ago I had my first baby and the company offers 12 months of paternity leave…if you're employed full-time and apparently they used the loophole that I was still a contract worker to avoid giving me even a day of paternity leave.
However, I was recently moved off of my contract and hired full-time given how well I've done for the company and how I've handled the mismanagement and bad situations I've been thrown into. And I've read the company docs and confirmed that paternity leave is available for all full-time employees such as myself and can be taken within a year of the date of the birth. They just want 3 months notice, which is fine. The only rule according to their HR documents is you have to have been working at the company at the time of the event.
It's just fun when a company uses a loophole to not pay paternity leave, then it comes back to them with me using it when promoted shortly after that and I'll be looking for a new job during those 12 weeks when I get a lot more time with my son! Should be a fun time!
