Maybe we both saw each other struggling in our old roles and was like “yup they get it.”
Maybe it was just dumb luck and a lack of better referrals.
But man I am so thankful for my past coworker and our shared connection of just helping each other get jobs. We aren't even friends, we literally only talk to each other when we need referrals lmao.
We only worked together for 3 months but have been each other's references for multiple jobs for at least 3 years – now we both just accepted amazing offers in our desired fields. I barely remember his work style, I just know he's a good dude, so I always give him a glowing review if I'm called. I don't blatantly lie but just say general positive things. I assume he does the same, because I've received 2 offers after his referrals.
I dunno if this is truly antiwork but it feels like a cheat code for aceing the interview stage. References feel kind of weird already – why not connect my employer with someone I know will say positive things (even if they barely remember me)?
Tldr: be someone's reference and ask them to be yours, do it forever, who cares if you actually remember their work if they're a good person? Positivity and confidence are all you need to help someone's dreams – and with luck, they'll do the same for you indefinitely.
