Job 1 is my husband's. It is part time 15 hours per week, M-W-F. He gets 10 days PTO per year when his boss decides to close the shop for his own (boss's) vacation. Any other time off is unpaid and discouraged since it leaves the store short-handed. No health or retirement benefits. Pay is above minimum in the job's location, but below it for our home location. 6 paid holidays.
Job 2 is mine. It is full time M-F. 30 days PTO per year. PTO is almost always granted whenever requested. Good pay and a great health plan that covers both of us. An OK retirement plan. 13 paid holidays.
Job 3 is my husband's. It is part time two days a week, Tu-Th. It is at the same company I work for so it has the same benefits and PTO. It pays less than my job but 50% more than he gets paid at Job1. He gets the same paid holidays as me but only when they fall on a Tuesday or Thursday.
If you guessed our lives revolve around the lowest-paying, least-flexible job (Job 1), you would be correct!
Want to take a long weekend camping trip? Then we set up camp in the dark because Hubby has to work in Friday before we can drive up. 3 day weekend and want to enjoy it? Nope! Unless it is one of the two Monday holidays allowed by Boss 1, Hubby has to work!
Need to see a doctor? Only if it is on Tuesday or Thursday. Because Boss 2 is flexible, he gets to subsidize Boss 1 being inflexible.
We take a week of PTO from Job2 and Job3? Hubby has to work 3 of those days at Job1 so we can't go anywhere.
This has been the case for over 15 years! I am sick of it.
And I cannot convince my husband there is something wrong with it.
