I have been out of work for almost 5 years now. And my stepdad dropped my name to someone he was working with.
It's like a general purpose car shop that has a small fabrication welding shop. And they do all kinds of stuff.
Or did anyways. Apparently they fired every worker there. “For stealing.”
Anyways. My stepdad dropped my name to come in and weld some stuff for them. Because it was an emergency…. because they fired the welder of course.
Seriously. This place has been around for 30 years. And they fired everyone.
Now they got the owner, the owner's brother in law, and owner's girlfriend.
The kicker is the owner's brother in law is working 100 plus hours a week!
So they payed me 78 dollars for about 3 hours work that day.
Then they invited me to come “work” for them.
I have worked for 3 days now. I actually told them I wanted a steady job. Instead of per weld.
It's pretty cushy. I get a chair to sit in, and fans, and free Gatorade. Which honestly these “perks” are a lot better than my previous welding jobs.
I'm in a lot of pain due to being out of work for 5 years. So I try to sit a lot.
I like welding of course, and it's a good job to get back in the swing of things. To build up stamina.
….it's just everything else I hate.
It's insanely unorganized. All the previous employees just dropped whatever they doing and led. There is tools everywhere. In random places. It took me forever to find all the welding stuff.
My stepdad gets pissed off cause it takes him hours to look for the tools he needs. He go to the point where he just brings his own.
I weld stuff. And fabricate. And he does work on the actual cars.
They tell me they need something. I'm like okay. But we are missing the needed metal. They say. I will order the metal. Of course that was a day ago. And today the owner came to ask me again about what metal we need. Apparently its urgent though/s
I get to weld a little bit. And sit around. Or walk around the shop. Today I swept the shop. Sorry for my rambling. Basically work conditions suck. Despite all the “perks”
The real kicker though. I haven't signed a single piece of paper.
I told them when I started I wanted it to be a regular job. As in health insurance, and like a guarantee they will actually freaking pay me.
Because right now. There is no paper trail. They can just claim that I didn't do shit. And just refuse to pay me.
My stepdad said he has had trouble getting his money.
I also wanted it like that because of course we taxes and shit.
They normally they take them out of your paycheck. I don't even know how much I'm supposed to be getting payed. They hinted at 12. But only for welding stuff. And just lazing about or pushing a broom would be like 9 I think.
Supposedly the guy has been in business for 30 years. His communication skills a crap.
It's mostly the brother in law doing the talking.
I don't know if I should just cut and run now. Or wait till Friday at least. This place fucking terrifies me. Again no fucking insurance. Doing dangerous work.
I can't really put into words how crazy this shit is to me. After seeing so many organized job sites.
It looks like it used to be organized.
I'm gonna cut it here. I can write about this shit all night. But this is probably the limit of what y'all will read.
So yeah. Just like. What the fuck do I do?
