Advice on Quitting Current Job

Appreciate yall in advance for reading this one over. For brevity and confidentiality, I am not going to go into major details on the situation, but I think I need advice from the antiwork crew. First and foremost, I want to say that after reading back this post, it's very clear that I am scared of my boss. That fear is a huge reason as to why I am making this post. Essentially, I need my fears validated or invalidated, as you'll see below. I have been in my current position for almost 2 years. During this time, I have experienced some of the worst harassment, retaliation, and discrimination that I've ever personally heard of. Like absolutely EEOC violations out the wazoo. I am not the only employee to receive treatment like this, but all my coworkers tell me they think I've had the worst situation, so I know its…

I am not the only employee to receive treatment like this, but all my coworkers tell me they think I've had the worst situation, so I know its been pretty damn bad.

I am an integral part of the team that I am on, and it has been made very clear to me that my work is extremely valuable. However, I am not treated as if my work is valuable, let alone am I paid as if my work is valuable. We aren't offered benefits of any kind, the payscale is not reflective of the laws that require equal payment for equal work, and there is internal corruption with HR and the admin team. Plus, I am expected to work all hours of the day if something is needed (for example, if someone doesn't finish their work on time but it's due to the client that day, I will have to finish the work because I am capable of getting the work done fast and efficiently).

Thankfully, I was offered a job that is absolutely better than my current one, even if I dismiss the problems I've been having there. Better pay, benefits, a career jump, etc. I am obviously going to take this job. They even want me to start as soon as I am able to. But there's a bit of a catch.

I have been advised by numerous professionals, including some of my coworkers, that I should quit without notice. Many reasons have been given for this, but the logical and most common reason given is that they are concerned that my boss will try to manipulate me into staying, or that he will retaliate in a manner that will cost me my career (he is known for purposefully and maliciously going after people who he has an issue with). I live in an at-will state, so legally this is completely acceptable. I also have been advised to lie to him about why I am quitting, as many people believe he will try to find my new job and sabotage me in some way. My new job is aware of this and don't seem to be concerned. But I don't know if he would take other routes for sabotage (like reporting me falsley to my college or threatening legal action, though nothing would he valid, as I never violated any policies or procedures).

However, I have a lot of work supplies at my home office, including files, that need to be returned to the office. I have a coworker who has agreed to pick everything up for me and take them in so that I don't have to go in-person to quit (it is going to be hostile, even if I were to give 2 months notice, so going in seems pointless to me).

My concern is two fold-

  1. Is there any way that quitting without notice can bite me in the ass? Whether that be long or short term? What would your concerns be about doing this?

  2. Should I give a reason, truthful or not, as to why I am leaving? Or should I basically say that I am not able to tell him why I'm leaving?

TDLR; quitting current job with abusive environment for a new job that's way better, but have been given advice to quit without notice. Advice on the situation is appreciated, especially on how to inform my boss and how much to disclose to him.
