I’m working as a legal assistant and have been working full time there for 6 months. I am paid less then the Pizza Express and Tim Hortons starting wage. There are no benefits or any time off or sick days. I really have liked the job and have worked really hard at it. At the start I was working part time and had no experience in the field so the wage was alright. It was all fine until I crashed my car while doing errands for the office (that I am not paid mileage for even though I do them everyday) and $6000 later I’m struggling to make rent. I asked my boss for a raise after laying out how I had switched to full time and had become very proficient at my job and she said she would think about it but she had not given any one a raise in 3 years so it was unlikely I would get one. She obviously does not even think it’s a problem that she does not give raises as she told me about it herself. She’s also not super great person to work for she gets mad at us whenever we do anything wrong and makes herself very unapproachable because whether the problem is your fault or not she will get mad at you for it. Here is the real conundrums though I leave for school in six months so I worry about being able to find a job elsewhere and I would really like to stay in the field of law if I can. I also have no previous experience in law as she hired me straight out of high school. So the chances of me finding a job that I can only stay at for 6 months with little experience is Slim. I’ve been a great employee I arrive ten minutes early and I leave an average of half an hour late. All of her employees but one are paid under the average starting wage for a legal assistant even though they have been there for years now. We also almost all have to stay late at work almost everyday because there is too much work to do. So is worth it to wait it out or should I find a menial job not in my field that I probably won’t like the work of as much and it won’t give me experience or should I stick it out for 6 months in a job that treats me like crap where we are all overworked and under paid. Or is there an alternate anything I can do too make my current situation better?
