Always be job hopping

Found out someone I worked with about 14 years ago is still at the same place, making about £10k a year more than we were on back in 2008. I’ve always job hopped usually due to extreme boredom / redundancy, and always felt this was a bad thing. However, I realised recently it’s totally worked in my favour. As it’s what a lot of people (bosses / company owners) decry as something intrinsically bad, I figured I’d share my salary progression with everyone on here, as I think it’s kinda interesting. I’m not a ‘go getting’ career minded person btw, I just fall into jobs that I reckon I can do with the minimum of fuss (and then usually quit when I realise it’s not what I want to do anymore). The stars (*) indicate a new job, otherwise the wage increase is a pay rise. 2003 – £11k, 2005…

2003 – £11k,
2005 – £13k,
2008 – £16k
,
2009 – £17k,
2012 – £20k,
2013 – £20.5k,
2014 – £30k (not sure how I swung this, but I literally just asked my current boss to pay me more or I’d leave, so they paid me more),
2016 – £34k
,
2017 – £40k*
2018 – £44k*,

Other than the anomaly in 2014, pay rises have been £1-2k max, but moving jobs got me an increase of between £3-6k

Got made redundant in 2020 (yay) and now work for myself earning more than I ever did when working for someone else, and do less hours, work around my kids school time etc.

Moral of the story, I dunno, I guess jobs are bullshit but annoyingly necessary. Get paid or GTFO.
