Always get it in writing

I work in a Canadian school – compared to most people at least in North America, we have a good salary and great benefits. Not to mention a fairly strong union. I am the union rep at my school. Recently, a coworker of mine came to ask me about bereavement leave. Our CBA allows a decent number of days, but most of them have to be taken immediately. Well, that was the kicker. VP asked principal, answer is negative, coworker has to take the days right away.

He sent a very incensed message to the VP that “If I didn't ask for it in writing, I would've gotten neither of those dates and be utterly fucked”

Always get promises in writing. And right away. Especially if they go against established rules.
